Wrexham and Chester football clubs are launching a campaign ahead of next month’s derby clash at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Ground, and are calling on ordinary fans to #ReclaimTheGame.

The joint work will see the Boards of both clubs sign a pledge to work together, and they will call on fans to sign a similar pledge online. The three week campaign will also include interviews with current and former players explaining what the derby rivalry between Chester and Wrexham is all about, as well as describing some of the longstanding co-operation between the clubs.

The three-week campaign will run across press, radio and social media and is a response to events during the last couple of derby games – which have marred the atmosphere, following a number of years when the teams were in different leagues.

Spencer Harris, Director of Wrexham AFC said “This is a unique derby game. It is the only fan-owned, cross-border derby in the country. There is a passionate rivalry between our two great clubs, but as wholly fan-owned clubs there is also far more that unites than divides us.”

“The clubs will work together, and with other partners and fans with the aim of normalising the fixture and removing the requirement for designated travel arrangements. This is something all fans can unite behind”

“We urge the fans of both clubs to turn out in numbers for the derby on March 7th to #ReclaimTheGame and demonstrate the exemplary behaviour that will help us achieve this aim.”

Chester FC Chairman, Grenville Millington said “Both clubs are very competitive, and there is no suggestion that we shouldn’t continue to share our traditional healthy rivalry. This is an important fixture for us and for 90 minutes both teams will be doing all they can on the pitch to win.”

“However, we also want all the fans of both teams to stand up and be counted, and to show what the culture of this special match is really about – banter not bitterness.”

“We will be releasing more details about the pledges and other events as the campaign progresses”.

Week 1 of the campaign will explain the ticketing arrangements for the game, as well as the what the #ReclaimTheGame initiative is all about. During the week of 16th February the joint Board pledge and a website for the fans online pledge will also be launched.

Week 2 of the campaign will look back on previous derbies and remind fans what the traditional culture is all about. Interviews with former players and some of the oldest fans will be part of this week.

The final week of the campaign will feature current players and fans, and look forward to an exciting game on March 7th.

There will be some additional special events on the day of the game to celebrate the passionate rivalry shared by Chester FC and Wrexham AFC.
